Dinner With Friends

We had an amazing Sunday. I sadly said goodbye to many of my Sunday School kids as they promoted to the 7th grade class. It was sad to see them go, because they are such wonderful kids, but I look forward to seeing them grow in their knowledge of our Lord and Savior.

A couple of weeks ago, our church sent a mission team to Africa. Today, they were able to share about their trip. It was really great. Our worship service was incredible and we had a very moving decision time.

This evening, we met our friends, Danny, Michelle, Carah, Cate, and Caleb for supper at Genghis Grill.

I can't believe that Carah has grown-up so much. She is so beautiful and a wonderful helper!

Reed enjoyed playing hard with Carah and Cate!

It was great to catch up with Danny and Michelle. We don't get to see them nearly as often as we would like.

After we left GG, we decided to call Brandon and Tamara to see where they were so that we could give Brandon his birthday present. He actually turned 30 today even though we celebrated last weekend. We decided to call because we thought he might be at Panera, and would you believe he was!!!

He dropped Tamara, MegHan, and Britton off at Target. We were going to try to all meet up at Panera, but we ended up having an impromptu playdate at Target!

We decided that we would try to let Reed just "happen" by Tamara and the gang, and Abbey heard Britton squealing near the balls. That shows you how much Abbey sees Britton that she recognized his voice.

Of course, Reed was thrilled to help Britton play with the balls from the ball pit. I am sure that Target would have preferred that we buy them!

Look at how old Brandon looks!! We love Mr. Brandon. That's also Miss MegHan in the picture.

Best Friends!

Continue to pray for those in the path of Gustav!

Fun Friday

I apologize for not blogging last night. We were out at Brandon and Tamara's and got in around 9:00 PM. I laid down with Reed and the next thing I knew Abbey was waking me up and telling me to come to bed.

Reed enjoyed his meal for breakfast as you can tell!

Abbey and Reed met me at work when I got off today. Reed went home with KayKay and we went to the Frist Center for Visual Arts. It was really fun to get to go on a date.

After the museum, we went to eat at Demo's. It was so great.

Then we went to *drum roll please* Target without child! It was a nice stroll!

We also went to Marti & Liz, which is a discount shoe store which sells namebrand shoes that were like display shoes. It was really cool.

We went to pick Reed up and he apparently had a blast at KayKay and PaKen's, because he was laughing and playing and talking!

We rounded out the evening by meeting Uncle Bubba to eat ice cream!

Giving Mama a Scare!

Today Abbey and Reed went to G'ville and did a little shopping. Abbey had a $25.00 Gymboree giftcard that was burning a hole in her pocket. After Gym, they went to Target. All of a sudden Reed started shivering and Abbey said he started getting blotches on his skin.

She called me and I told her to call the Peds. They asked her about what he was doing and then said to monitor him and take him to the ER if it continued.

By the time they arrived home, Reed's temp was 103, so that scared Abbey so she called the Peds again. They told her he might have had a seizure, but it was probably a mild infant-type one.

They called back and said that the doctor wanted to see Reed, so we took him in. We had the last appointment for the day, so we got out late and didn't make it to church. His doctor was so nice and was thrilled when Abbey began describing what happened and realized it was not a seizure, but probably just happened when his temp rose so quickly.

Ultimately, she said Reed had a cold and the early stages of an ear infection, so we got an antibiotic. Needless to say, Reed gave Abbey quite the scare today.

DINK vs SIWK

Okay, so I've been thinking about doing this post for a while and it might actually have to come in a couple of installments.

There was a time when we were DINKs. That's Double Income No Kids. Then, all of a sudden we went from being DINKs to SIWKs. Single Income With Kid.

July 25, marked our 1 year anniversary of Abbey's last full-time paycheck. In the past couple of weeks, a few people have said, "How do you do it?" So, here's my attempt to explain how we do it.

Being on only 1 regular income makes you really have to think about the things that you buy and the way you spend money.

Some things we did when we were DINKs:

1. We had a housekeeper who came 1 every 2 weeks.
2. We ate out several nights a week.
3. I ate out almost everyday at work.
4. We went to Target at least once a week and ALWAYS made a purchase.
5. We pretty much spent money exactly the way we wanted too.

Now, we also paid our share of stupid tax. Me especially. I've had quite a few different cars since Abbey and I have been married. We also leased one car (MISTAKE!). Now, though, we have a Jeep that's paid for and has 147,000 miles, and a van that is not paid for. We bought it used and thankfully, bought it almost a year before we got Reed. It should be paid for within a couple of years. I wish that we would have doubled up payments when we were DINKs.

As SIWKs, we have a few things that we are trying to do to make sure we are wise with our money.

1. We tithe.
2. I still contribute 7% of my income to retirement. My employer also contributes, so that is a helpful addition.
3. We try to pay down our debts.

So, all that to say, how do we do it?

I'm not exactly sure, but I can tell you what we do.

1. We pay our bills. We try to be conservative with our energy usage, so that those bills are as reasonable as possible.
2. I carpool. Abbey limits how much she drives.
3. We limit the number of times we eat out.
4. Abbey plans our menus for two-weeks and shops accordingly.
5. My CVS habit (yeah, you've made fun of it) has kept us from having to buy things like deoderant, shampoo, body wash, medicines, etc.
6. Abbey does get income from writing, which we normally put directly towards bills.
7. Abbey works a night a week when possible at the Catfish House. We use this money for "fun" money.
8. We try to be thrifty with Reed's clothing purchases. Abbey and I are going to be thrifty too, but we haven't really bought any clothes for ourselves.
9. Whenever we get money for gifts, we always try to use it really on ourselves, because it is the only time we really get to splurge on something for ourselves.
10. I take my lunch to work, although I do eat out 1 day a week usually.

I am sure that there are a few other things, but one thing that I think is very important is that you take time to go out to eat, or do something fun. If you become so intense on trying to be thrifty you will go crazy.

Some things we don't do are:

1. Save a lot of money. We put what we can away, but that is not very common. That's why we are careful to still put towards my retirement.
2. We try not to add anything to credit cards. If we do pay for something with a credit card, we try to pay it off when the bill comes. (Note: we are still paying on our trip to Taiwan).
3. We don't rush out and make purchases larger than $25.00. Sometimes, we don't even rush out and buy groceries. We learn to make do.

So, why do we do it?

1. At this point in our lives as parents, we feel like it is God's plan for Abbey to stay home with Reed. Can that change? Yes, but at this point, we are thankful that God has helped us make it this far.
2. Have you been looking at those pictures that have accompanied these picture? Every financial strain or sacrifice we've had to make is completely worth it!

Things to think about:

1. With such financial pressure, how will we afford to bring home Ava? We're praying about that, and we'd love for you to pray with us. We are in the process of exploring some options.
2. Last year when Abbey went to work as a full-time mom, gas prices were $2.26 a gallon. Assume a gas usage of 10 gallons a week per Land vehicle, and then an average gas price of $3.75 (thankfully, ours has dropped to $3.49), but that's about 1.50 more a gallon. That's a difference of $30.00 a week. That's $1560.00 more per year. Now, that's not the only price that has risen in the past year.
3. Faith. You've got to have it. There are times when you want to throw in the towel and say, "Abbey's got to go back to work," but it's during those times that our faith has to be strong that we are following God's will for our lives.
4. I don't think that we will ever have an experience that we will say, "I wish that Abbey could have spent more time at work." Being able to help Reed grow up is an incredible blessing.

So, are you more confused than ever?

That was all heavy, so I will lighten things up with this picture. Reed had a blanket over his head and thought it was so funny.

This smile was plentiful today! Reed was so happy!

He had a blast tonight with Miss Candace. We had a choir party.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating, WE ARE SO BLESSED!

P.S. Reed went to sleep with very little fuss tonight!

Anniversary Post

First of all, I'm sorry that last night's title was never explained. Reed has decided that he is no longer interested in sleeping in his baby bed, so last night we tried letting him sleep in the twin bed that was in his room.

Reed went to sleep pretty easily in his new bed and only woke up once. The only thing that we don't like about this is that the door is closed. Although tonight, we bought a baby gate for his room.

Miss Candace was gracious enough to come and keep Reed tonight while we went on an anniversary date.

Nana and Putty gave us a Macaroni Grill giftcard a while back, so we were able to dine for free! Woo-hoo!

After supper, we went to Gymboree and then we went to Target. I know, we're so exciting!

1 in the 7 Days of Abbey!

Her Love. I could be really cheesy and say, "It's her love, it just does something to me, sends a shock right through me, I can't get enough." but that would be copying the words from a country song and you know I don't really care for country. Abbey is an amazing wife, I think I've established that, but I am amazed at the way she loves me. I mean, I am quirky, have weird habits, etc. but she still loves me. She even loved me when I looked like I had worms 7 years ago when we got married and I only weighed 115 pounds! Now, she loves me even though I've pack on about 75 pounds since we've been married. You all have seen how good she cooks! I am so thankful for my wife and I can't believe that we have been married for 7 years! We're looked forward to another 70!

Fun With Enna and Poppy!

Okay, I think that Reed is making it clear that he is ready for me to set the aquarium up that he got for his birthday. He loves looking at Enna and Poppy's fish.

Today, Reed:

1. Went to Wal-Mart with Enna and then Dollar Tree. He scored not 1, but 2 balloons!

2. He played on the tractor.

3. He played with Uncle Trae.

4. He played in/with the water hose.

5. He discovered bugles (the chips).

6. He went to bed at 8:30 with no fuss (and we weren't here!).

Today, we:

1. I went to teach my conference.

2. Abbey got to get dressed all by herself with no help from Reed.

3. Abbey got to read and watch TV.

4. Reed and I took a nap.

5. We got to eat at Old Venice (another Mississippi must-go).

6. We went shopping and didn't buy a thing (not even from Target!).

7. We went by our old house in Brandon.

8. We went to McAlister's and enjoyed tea and conversation with one another without interruption. It was nice. The little things are great aren't they?

Enna got Reed one of those little ferret and ball things from Cracker Barrel. Reed was thrilled, Abbey—not so much.
